Welcome to the second installment of our Search Engine Optimization series. If you\u2019ve been following along, you remember that our post last month focused on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/?p=912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basics of website optimization<\/a>. This month we are going to delve into the basics of keyword research, a very important component of Search Engine Optimization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Including the right keywords in the content of your website can really make or break your website traffic. For example, the difference in searches between \u201cembroidered apparel\u201d and \u201cembroidered clothing\u201d could be huge, but how do you know? Thankfully, through a little detective work most business owners can determine which keywords their target market is searching for online.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">To start, take a minute and create your own list of keywords and keyword phrases that you would search for online to find the products and services that your business offers.\u00a0 Ask a fellow coworker or friend to do the same. Come up with a list of 10-20 keywords. \u00a0As a general rule, the more keywords in a phrase, the easier it is to rank as theoretically there is generally less competition. For example, \u201cembroidered corporate polo shirt\u201d should be easier to rank for than \u201cembroidered polo\u201d. <!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Next, take these keywords straight to Google and lets test with their <a href=\"https:\/\/adwords.google.com\/KeywordPlanner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">. Yes, this tool is tied to Google\u2019s Adwords platform where you can pay for Google ads, but once you sign up for a free account you can also use the keyword planner to determine traffic volume, keyword competition, and get suggestions for additional keywords. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">After you sign up, click on \u201cSearch for new keyword and ad group ideas\u201d. After you\u2019ve entered your initial keywords and narrowed by location (if your customers are specific to one area), make sure to toggle over to the \u201cKeyword Ideas\u201d section vs the \u201cAd Group Ideas\u201d section. At this point you will be able to see search volume, competition for keywords, additional keyword suggestions and suggested bids if you were to pay for ads. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"><strong>Another Tip!<\/strong> A common mistake when performing keyword research is forgetting to run the numbers for both singular and plural versions of your keywords and keyword phrases. For example, include both \u201cembroidered shirt\u201d and \u201cembroidered shirts\u201d in your list of potential keywords. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">An additional quick search you should perform is within Google search page itself as this will provide you with the most commonly searched keywords behind your root terms. For example, \u201cembroidered clothing labels\u201d and \u201cembroidered clothing tags\u201d are most commonly searched after \u201cembroidered clothing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/keywordresearchsearchengineoptimization.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-916\" title=\"keywordresearchsearchengineoptimization\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/keywordresearchsearchengineoptimization.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/keywordresearchsearchengineoptimization.jpg 724w, https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/keywordresearchsearchengineoptimization-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For an expanded view, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/ubersuggest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ubersuggest<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. \u00a0This is a pretty cool tool that will provide you with an overview of commonly typed in Google searches for your keywords.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Once you\u2019ve reviewed the data, you should have a clearer sense of the types of keywords and keyword phrases people are searching for and hopefully you&#8217;ll have a handful of new phrases to target in your website content. Make sure to include these keywords in not only your website copy, but in image file names, header tags, and meta tags. You can refer to last month\u2019s blog on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qdigitizing.com\/blog\/?p=912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website optimization<\/a> for a full list of suggestions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">A few additional tools that can help with keyword research like<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/info\/keyword+research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEMrush<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">. These both have some free and some paid features and can help provide a broader overview of the landscape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We hope you found this installment of our SEO series helpful.
